What are Dental Implants?

Implants are mostly titanium based screws that are surgically placed into the jaw bone. They are a good option for patients looking to replace a single missing tooth, a tooth that has a hopeless prognosis and requires extraction or multiple missing teeth.

After the implant is placed, there will be a healing phase of about 3 months before the final implant crown is placed. In certain aesthetic cases, a temporary crown or denture may be fabricated.

They are done to replace missing teeth to restore function and aesthetics

How do Dental Implants work?

Denture supported implants help to support dentures that are loose to provide more retention and stability

Before an implant is placed, careful planning and examination is done with the help of X-rays. Some times a 3D X-ray is required for our dental team to assess the proximity of vital structures like nerves and to also assess bone volume.

Dental implants are artificial tooth roots that are inserted into the jawbone to replace missing natural teeth. Implants with their attached crowns closely mimic the look and function of real teeth. They can make an attractive alternative to dentures and bridges. Dental implants can be used to replace one or several missing teeth.

Why get dental implants?

Help to withstand greater bite pressures with dentures

Prevent bone loss in the jaw (may reduce risk of adjacent teeth becoming loose)

Prevent formation of hollowed/ collapsed cheeks that can occur after tooth extraction

May prevent gum recession

Unlike bridges, do not require trimming of adjacent teeth

Firmly secured in jaws

Usually more comfortable than dentures

Can help to better retain dentures

FAQs

  • Are dental implants suitable for everyone?

Most adults with missing teeth are suited for dental implants but there are a few conditions that may affect eligibility, such as:

    • Having active gum disease
    • Having a habit of smoking and/or drinking
    • Being below the age of 18
    • Have bone loss in the jaw
    • Have uncontrolled diabetes

If you’re unsure whether dental implants are right for you, we encourage you to contact us and speak with our doctors to learn more.

  • How long do dental implants last?

With proper care, dental implants can last for many years—20 years or even longer. However, this will depend on:

    • Regular dental checkups
    • Good oral hygiene habits, such as brushing and flossing regularly

To ensure your implants last a lifetime, maintain proper care and visit your dentist for routine evaluations.

  • How long does it take to recover from a dental implant?

Initial recovery typically takes a few days to a week, during which swelling and minor discomfort may occur. However, full healing and implant integration with the jawbone can take 3 to 6 months.

  • Are dental implants safe?

Yes, dental implants are safe and biocompatible, meaning they integrate naturally with the tissue in your mouth without causing harm. If you have any concerns about the procedure, feel free to get in touch with us.

  • Are dental implant procedures painful?

The dental implant procedure is performed under local anaesthesia, so you won't feel pain during the surgery. After the procedure, some mild discomfort, swelling, or soreness is common, but it can be managed with over-the-counter pain medication.
