When to have an orthodontic assessment:

Most teeth crowding problems are apparent by 7-9 years of age. The best age for a child to have an orthodontic assessment is around 7-8 years of age.

Early Treatment

Usually relatively simple, involving minimum appliances and often done while baby teeth are still present

Full Treatment

Best started when last baby tooth is lost at about 12 years of age

Adult Treatment

Treatment may take longer in adults because their jaw bones are more dense, in such cases, orthodontic treatment in combination with jaw surgery may be needed

How does orthodontic treatment work?

Braces

Step 1: Consultation

Your dentist will begin by performing a thorough examination of your teeth to assess your alignment and oral health.

Step 2: Taking A Mould

An accurate mould of your teeth will be created using a playdough-like material or digital scanning.

Step 3: Choosing A Treatment Plan

A personalised treatment plan will be crafted, outlining the type of braces and the expected duration of treatment.

Step 4: Fitting The Braces

The braces will be carefully fitted to your teeth, and any wires or bands will be securely attached to guide tooth movement.

Step 5: Setting Follow-Up Appointments

Regular follow-up appointments will be scheduled to adjust the braces, monitor progress, and ensure everything is on track.

Invisalign

Step 1: Consultation

Your dentist will perform a comprehensive examination of your teeth, discuss your goals, and answer any questions you have.

Step 2: Treatment Planning

X-rays, photographs, and impressions of your teeth will be taken to assist in creating your custom-made Invisalign.

Step 3: Placement of Invisalign

Once you receive your Invisalign, you’ll begin wearing them to gradually and comfortably shift your teeth into the desired position.

Step 4: Attend Follow-Up Appointments

Your dentist will perform a comprehensive examination of your teeth, discuss your goals, and answer any questions you have.

Step 5: Removal and Retainers

Once treatment is complete, the braces will be removed, and you’ll be fitted with retainers to maintain your new smile.

FAQs

  • Is there an age limit for braces?

While the ideal time to get braces is between the ages of 10 and 14 when the jaw is still developing, there is no age limit for braces. Adults of all ages can still benefit from orthodontic treatment, so speak to your dentist to explore your options.

  • Can I eat or drink while wearing braces?

Yes, you can, but there are certain types of food and drink you should avoid to prevent damage to your braces:

    • Sticky foods: Like caramel, toffee, or chewing gum.
    • Chewy foods: Such as bagels or tough meats.
    • Hard foods: Like nuts, popcorn, or hard candies.
    • Acidic or staining foods: Foods like tomatoes, citrus fruits, or curry can stain brackets.
    • Sugary or fizzy drinks: These can cause tooth decay and weaken enamel.
  • How do I care for my braces?

As braces are meant to be permanent fixtures until the end of treatment, taking care of them is essential. Here are some tips:

    • Brush and floss regularly
    • Rinse with mouthwash to remove debris and keep your mouth fresh.
    • Avoid smoking or using tobacco products
    • Avoid chewy, sticky, and messy foods
  • Can I get braces if I have missing teeth?

Yes, you can still get braces if you have missing teeth. Braces can help align the remaining teeth and create the necessary space for replacements like dental implants or bridges later on.

  • How often do I need to wear Invisalign?

You should wear your aligners for 20 to 22 hours a day for optimal results. While they can be removed for activities like eating, job interviews, or playing sports, it’s important to wear them consistently. If you don’t wear them often enough, your teeth may begin to shift back to their original position, delaying your progress.

  • Is Invisalign painful?

When you first wear your aligners, you may experience some mild discomfort as your teeth begin to adjust. This sensation usually fades within a few days as you get used to the aligners.

  • Can I eat or drink while wearing Invisalign?

No, you will need to remove your aligners before eating or drinking anything except for clear water, as food and beverages can stain or damage the aligners. Remember to brush your teeth after eating and rinse your aligners before putting them back in to maintain oral hygiene.

  • How can I maintain my Invisalign?

To keep your Invisalign well maintained and in good shape, follow these tips:

    • Clean your aligners daily with lukewarm water and gently brush with a soft toothbrush.
    • Always rinse your aligners when you take them out to prevent saliva and plaque buildup.
    • Clean your teeth before putting the aligners back in to avoid trapping food particles and bacteria.
    • Keep your aligners in their case when not in use to prevent loss or damage.
